Deer Canyon Literacy Lab
The Deer Canyon Literacy Lab provides reading/language arts intervention services to eligible students. Enrollment is based upon students' assessment data, test scores, and teachers' recommendations. The program provided by the literacy lab is flexible. It serves K-6 grade students by providing instruction and/or remediation in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, sight word/vocabulary development, comprehension, and fluency instruction. Based upon ongoing assessment data, students may be a part of Lit Lab anywhere from one to eight sessions. A session is one four week period. Services are provided by a team which consist of one Title 1 teacher/reading specialist and three assistant teachers.
- Mrs. April Flores says that teaching is her passion. Mrs. Flores has been an instructional aide in the district for 12 years. She has a BA in Human development from Azusa Pacific University with an emphasis in English. Mrs. Flores has two boys-Noah sixteen and Caleb who is fifteen. Both of Mrs. Flores' boys were DC Eagles so DC holds a special place in her heart. Mrs. Flores enjoys reading and writing and she loves sharing her excitement for those subject areas with her students.
- Mrs. Theragood is new to Deer Canyon. Mrs. Theragood also coaches girls basketball at Los Osos High School and is a community service specialist for the city of Rancho Cucamonga. She has a Bachelors of Arts in English and attends the University of Phoenix. Mrs. Theragood plans to receive her Masters in Education and credential in 2016. She loves to spend time with family, write, watch sports, read, and go shopping.
- Ms. Brittany Greene is also new to Deer Canyon. Ms. Greene says she has a passion for working with children. She has been working with special needs kidsfor the past three years in both classrooms and home care settings. Ms. Greene earned her BA in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside. She enjoys working out, going to the beach, and traveling.
- Ms. Kimberly Alford loves Deer Canyon school. Ms. Alford has been teaching for 18 years. She was a classroom teacher for 12 years and taught homebound students (cancer patients) for LAUSD for six years. She holds a Masters of Science in Reading from California State University-Fullerton, a Master of Arts in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and Social Work from the University of California-Berkeley. Ms. Alford's goal is to make every child a reader and a lifelong learner. She enjoys reading, traveling, walking, and baking.
