Preppy "K" Program
Alta Loma School District offers a Transitional Kindergarten or “Preppy K” program for students who fit age and need requirements. Preppy K is the first year of a two year kindergarten readiness program. We know that Preppy K aged children benefit from exposure to developmentally appropriate environments and learning strategies that enhance their emotional, social, and academic skills. Preppy K provides the opportunity for children to be better prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.
The Kindergarten Readiness Act was designed to help ensure that for students who qualified, a year of kindergarten readiness would provide a strong early start to help children read proficiently by the third grade- a critical milestone that predicts whether or not a student will graduate from high school. This legislation changed the requirements for Kindergarten entry from 5 years old by December 2nd, to five years old on September 1st.
All students beginning Kindergarten must be 5 years by September 1. Four year olds with birthdays between September 2 and December 2 are provided an additional year to prepare for Kindergarten by attending Preppy K. Our district provides the opportunity to receive Preppy K services for students who are not quite ready for kindergarten, as well as those students who will turn five by January 31.
Preppy K classes are being offered in school sites throughout the district. Registration packets will be available in the office of your home school on February 1, 2019. We encourage you to pick up a registration form and submit it to your home school.
We invite you to attend our Preppy K Parent Information Meeting on January 22, 2019 located at the District Support Center, 9390 Baseline Road at 6:30 p.m.
