Kasserian Ingera - And how are the children?” – Maasai Greeting
Dear Carnelian Family,
The Maasai people are from an accomplished African tribe that inhabits areas throughout Kenya and parts of northern Tanzania. They are respected for their fearsome and intelligent warriors. As I first learned about this group of people last year, what struck me was the traditional greeting that passes between warriors and officials in the tribe. They always say to one another, “Kasserian Ingera,” which means, “And how are the children?” The desired answer is, “All the children are well.” This is also the question asked at the beginning of tribal council meetings and other important gatherings. I love the fact that their focus is always on the well-being of their children. It is a reminder to me to keep our priorities set to ensure a safe, peaceful, nurturing environment for our children. At Carnelian, we have begun to ask this question as a way to start many of our staff meetings and leadership meetings.
As we deal with this pandemic and distance learning, it is important that we are doing all that we can to meet our students’ social, emotional, nutritional and academic needs. Some foundational questions that we can assess are: Are students safe and fed? Do they know they are loved and missed? Do they have coping skills to deal with this crisis? Do they have access to materials and technology? Are they learning? Some of these seem very basic, but if basic needs are not being met, then higher needs will not be met either. I am happy to say that, as of today, breakfast and lunch are available at no cost for all children in our community. Meals can be picked up daily at Carnelian from 11:45-12:45 and 11:10-12:10 on Mondays. This is due to the USDA extending the pandemic feeding program.
We are excited to recognize students in our first Flag Assembly for the year on Friday, September 4th. Here is a link to view this event: Carnelian Flag Assembly. We hope that you take a moment of time to join our PTA. You can stop by the office to join or click on the following link: Join Carnelian PTA. Our goal is to have the highest membership percentage in Alta Loma. Supporting PTA not only helps us provide enriching experiences for our students, but it sends a message that we value education and we want what is best for all of our children.
This may be a spoiler, but I want to let you know that this month’s Targets of Kindness Award from Carnelian goes to you! It goes to all of our parents, families, and friends who are working so hard to support our students during distance learning. We appreciate you! We value your partnership with us!
Thanks so much for partnering with us and supporting us as we do all that we can to enhance the lives of our students.
