New Superintendent Will Lead Alta Loma into its Next Chapter

The Alta Loma School District (ALSD) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the selection of accomplished educator, Dr. Sherry Smith, as the new Superintendent.

Dr. Smith’s career spans three decades serving students and families in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties as an elementary teacher, assistant principal, elementary, middle and high school principal, and assistant/deputy superintendent. Since 2014, Dr. Smith has worked in San Jacinto Unified School District (SJUSD) as the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and Deputy Superintendent of Human Resources. The depth and breadth of these combined experiences has allowed Dr. Smith to develop a strong understanding of the TK-12 school system and the many nuances that transpire throughout.

Known for her unwavering spirit, inclusivity, and ability to actively listen Dr. Smith has built strong teams and lasting partnerships in each organization she has served.  She has worked tirelessly to spotlight the great work of teachers, administrators, and support staff by securing numerous awards for the standout programs that have flourished under her leadership. Sherry herself has been recognized as Central Office Administrator of the Year, Secondary Administrator of the Year, and one of the Top Ten Professional Women in the Inland Empire.

“Based on Dr. Smith’s exceptional track record, it was clear to the Board that she is the ideal person to lead Alta Loma into our next chapter,” noted Board President Brad Buller. “Her reputation as a connector and trust-builder will serve the students, employees, parents, and greater Rancho Cucamonga community well. As our new superintendent, Dr. Smith will ensure ALSD continues to shine as the diamond we all know it to be.”

The Board would like to extend its appreciation to Dr. Smith and the other applicants who showed an interest in the position. Trustees also want to thank ALSD employees, parents, and community members who provided valuable input to enrich this selection process.

Looking ahead, Dr. Smith shared, “It’s an honor to serve this exceptional school district and family-oriented community. As your next Superintendent, I look forward to partnering with the Board, staff, students, and ALSD families to develop our roadmap for success together.”

Dr. Karen Hendricks will continue to serve as Alta Loma’s superintendent until Dr. Smith begins her new role July 1st.
