Preppy K Classroom Open House on April 26

Families interested in enrolling students in a transitional kindergarten program – or “Preppy K” – are invited to a special “Preppy K” classroom open house on Friday, April 26.

Separate sessions will be held from 9-10 a.m. and 1-2 p.m. at Alta Loma Elementary School and 9-10 a.m. at Victoria Groves Elementary. The event is for parents only.

ALSD offers the traditional kindergarten program who fit age and need requirements. Preppy K is the first year of a two-year kindergarten readiness program. Studies have shown that Preppy K-age children benefit from exposure to developmentally appropriate environments and learning strategies that enhance their emotional, social and academic skills. Preppy K provides the opportunity for children to be better prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

The Kindergarten Readiness Act was designed to help ensure that for students who qualify, a year of kindergarten readiness would provide a strong early start to help them read proficiently by the third grade. This is a critical milestone that predicts whether or not a student will graduate from high school. The Kindergarten Readiness Act legislation changed the requirements for kindergarten entry from 5 years old by Dec. 2, to 5 years old by Sept. 1.

As such, all students beginning kindergarten must be 5 years by Sept. 1.  Four-year-olds with birthdays between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2 are provided an additional year to prepare for kindergarten by attending Preppy K.

Preppy K classes are offered in school sites throughout the district.  Registration packets are available in the office of district elementary schools.
